What are Dental Emergencies?

Dental emergencies refer to any situation that requires immediate attention from a dental professional. Some of the most common dental emergencies include:

  • Toothache: A severe toothache can be a sign of a dental abscess, which requires immediate attention to prevent the infection from spreading.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth: A broken or chipped tooth can be incredibly painful and can also cause damage to the surrounding teeth and gums.
  • Knocked-out Tooth: A knocked-out tooth is a severe dental emergency that requires immediate attention to increase the chances of saving the tooth.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown falls out, it can cause discomfort and make it difficult to eat or speak.
  • Jaw Pain: Jaw pain can be a sign of a TMJ disorder or a more severe condition that requires immediate attention.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency?

If you experience a dental emergency, you must remain calm and take immediate action to minimize the damage and increase the chances of saving your tooth or teeth. Here are some tips on what to do during a dental emergency:

Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food particles stuck between your teeth. Take over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate the pain, and call our office to schedule an emergency appointment.

Broken or Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Call our office immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.

Knocked-out Tooth: Pick up the tooth by the crown and rinse it with water. Do not touch the root. Place the tooth in a milk or saliva container and bring it to our office immediately.

Lost Filling or Crown: Save the filling or crown and bring it to our office. Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental cement or sugarless gum to cover the exposed tooth.

Jaw Pain: Apply a cold compress to your jaw and take over-the-counter pain medication. Call our office to schedule an emergency appointment.

“I have never seen a dentist office that cares so much about their clients. They took special care of me when I had to evacuate from New Orleans because [of] Hurricane Ida. They got me [in] on the same day I called, and they even made sure my follow up was schedule[d] for any assistance I needed . . .”
